My first few years teaching third graders comprehension skills was challenging. However I discovered that fluency is highly related to reading comprehension. Some ways to assist students with fluency:
- Echo your partner: you read a sentence or section of text first; the student follows closely, echoing your reading.
- Read the entire section of text to the student; next the student reads it to you.
- Ask the student to read the passage silently before reading it aloud.
- Have students read the text several times in a row, each time working on their fluency.
- Engage students in choral reading, shared reading and readers theater.
- Share poetry by reading it together a number of times.
- Recast stories as scripts and invite students to perform them.
- Invite students to record passages of their reading on iPods, iPads, or any technology tool.
